Sweet & crunchy

Blueberries are also known as bilberries or whortleberries. They are bluish black with a silvery wax coating and have a mild, sweet flavour. Blueberries are a source of vitamin E, a well-known antioxidant.

History

Blueberries originated in North America. Early Native Americans already greatly appreciated their delicious flavour. They even used the plant’s roots, to make a strong aromatic, medicinal tea. Blueberries are available all the year round.

Flavour and use

Blueberries are a real food lover’s treat. Their delicious refreshing flavour makes them ideal for use in muffins, pancakes, cakes and flans or with yoghurt or cottage cheese. They also taste wonderful combined with cheese or thinly sliced meat or chicken in a salad. That is, if you still have any left to use in a salad; they are so irresistible that you may well find you have eaten the whole lot before you start preparing your meal.

What to look out for

When buying blueberries, make sure they feel firm and look dewy. Blueberries are vulnerable, so handle them carefully and don't rinse them until you are about to serve them. Until that time, store them unrinsed in your refrigerator, preferably spread out on a plate. Blueberries can be kept for a few months in a deep freeze.
